DUOCAP® Capsule-in-Capsule Technology

DUOCAP® technology facilitates meeting a number of client goals:
- Formulating combination products or dual release of a single compound
- Tailoring dissolution profiles to better meet a client’s therapeutic goals
- Unique finished product presentation for brand recognition
DUOCAP® can be utilized for immediate release, extended release, pulsed or delayed release.
The inner capsule of this unique delivery system can contain liquid, semi-solids, powder or pellets, while the outer capsule can be either a liquid or semi-solid formulation.
The outer capsule typically is utilized for immediate release of a combination product or first phase of a dual release formulation. The liquid or semi-solid formulation of the outer capsule further facilitates faster therapeutic onset vs. solid formulation. Lipid-based formulations in either the inner and/or outer capsules are typically used to improve the bioavailability of the formulation.
Capsugel has extensive experience in formulating combination products with incompatible compounds and /or deliver compounds to different regions of the GI tract. Our know-how in capsule coating allows our scientists to further tailor the dissolution profiles of DUOCAP®-based products.
